5 facts about SEO that are actually myths!

April 28, 2019 Prashanth Krishnappa

The first thing anyone should understand is that SEO is a vastly huge subject that keeps on getting upgraded. And as with anything huge that keeps getting refined and redefined, misinformation and misconceptions are bound to creep in. So without further ado following are some of the points that needs to be known by any SEO person.

1: Search engines values backlinks from ALL high ranking websites

As with any technology that keeps evolving, it keeps learning to keep out the bugs at bay. SEO is no different. Sure, there was a time when backlinks from high DA sites were sought after, make no mistakes that they still are, but with the evolving SEO algorithms the buck has to stop somewhere. Or in this case, relevance. So basically even  if your backlinks come from high DA sites, if the relevancy is not there, its as good as not having it.

2: Search engines rank faster loading pages better

Though site loading speed is an indicator, it does not directly affect your rankings. Search engines will crawl your pages even if it takes longer time to load (sometimes upto 3 min!). But that being said, it indirectly affects your ranking by taking into consideration the user behaviour i.e., bounces. So for the time being, if you can avoid the bounces, the loading speed might be a lesser concern.

3. Crawl budget is unlimited

This is one of the most controversial topic which sways both the ways, depending on whom you ask.
Though for small sites it may not matter, its a pressing issue for larger websites where the pages need to be crawled on a regular basis. The best way to check out if all your pages are crawled is actually pretty simple. We know that the last priority is given to the 404 pages while crawling, so just check if all the 404 pages in your site is crawled, if yes, then certainly all your pages have been.

4. You should use disavow file to clean up your backlinks

Pruning backlinks as it was historically done was a standard activity of any SEO pro. But search engines have improved their algorithms significantly to address this issue. They can now automatically assess and disregard backlinks which maybe hurting your site. But if there is a manual action done on your site, you need to quickly address the issue since this may escalate before you know it. So the recommendation is, only use it when you have to remove an offending manual link.

5. Search engine penalises duplicate content

Unless the site is entirely made up of duplicate content to manipulate rankings, the search engine do not penalise your ranking.
Immense as the internet is, duplicate content cannot be avoided in its entirety. Sometimes these contents props up and the latest algorithms are intelligent enough to analyse and get to know which came first. Google looks at only the quality of content and more importantly the relevance of it. But that does not mean you can just rip off content from sites, you are still liable for ethical and copyright stuff 🙂

Conclusion

I hope this post clears some air about some of the misconceptions. Feel free to post your comments or disagreements or maybe your results that might prove to be helpful for the community.
